Acid Blue 9 (CAS No. 3844-45-9) is a reddish-violet to dark-blue powder or granular dye with a metallic look. It is highly soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 50 g/L at 90 °C, and is also soluble in ethanol. When treated with strong sulfuric acid, it appears orange initially and later turns pale yellow upon dilution. Its aqueous solution gives a greenish-blue color; when sodium hydroxide is added to the solution, it turns to a colorless state and gives a deep purple precipitate. The dye has a molecular formula of C37H34N2Na2O9S3 and is of the triarylmethane group of dyes. Acid Blue 9 is widely recognized under names such as Brilliant Blue FCF, FD&C Blue No. 1, C.I. 42090, and is designated by E-number E133.
