Acridine Orange HCl (CAS No. 65-61-2) is a popular fluorescent dye with the property of cell penetration and nucleic acid conjugation. In low concentrations, it intercalates DNA and precipitates RNA, and higher concentrations lead to the denaturation of both DNA and RNA. This stain is accumulated in acidic organelles in a pH-dependent fashion. At neutral pH, green fluorescence is produced, whereas bright red fluorescence is produced in acidic conditions. The acridine orange HCl is also known as 3,6-Bis(dimethylamino)acridine hydrochloride.
