Alcian Blue 8GX Certified (CAS No. 33864-99-2) is a dark blue to purple crystalline powder, which is a cationic histological dye. It can be used in the pH 2.5 procedure of Mowry, pH 5.7 procedure of Scott, and staining procedure of keratin and mucin as suggested by Kreyberg. Its molecular formula is C56H68Cl4CuN16S4 and is also known as Alcian Blue or Ingrain Blue 1. The compound is slightly soluble in water and dissolves in ethanol, ethylene glycol or cellosolve and almost insoluble in xylene. Its conjugated structure is large and therefore makes it ideal in the histological staining procedures.
