Azure B is a synthetic dye that is provided in the form of a dark green to brown powder. Dissolved in water, it forms a colorless blue to dark blue solution at 1 mg/mL solution. Azure B with the chemical formula C15H16ClN3S is also known as N,N,N -Trimethylthionin, Azure I or Methyleneazure. It is an organic chloride salt which has 3-(dimethylamino)-7-(methylamino)phenothiazin-5-ium serving as the counterion and is commonly used in the process of preparing Azure-Eosin stains used in blood smear staining. Another metabolite of methylene blue is also azure B.
